Let me get something out of the way first. I know writing about security breaches three times in a few months means you’ll probably expect me to stop referring to people as “people” and start referring to them as “sheeple”.

Well, you’re right.

Wake up sheeple.

Last week, we said the Canadian government’s knowledge and preparation for online security breaches is “embarrassing”.

And that was a sourced comment.

Despite this, we’re not sure we drove the point home exactly as far as we should have. Let’s say we only made it to the end of the driveway, and this is a last little nudge through the (dangling) screen door.

The good news is this time we’ve got back up.

Useful Resources and Tips

We come armed yet again with a sourced incident, this time affecting 500 million people

In addition, we come bearing gifts – well, gift.

Jolera, an IT Security company, came forward with a multitude of lessons and considerations when preparing for a potential breach –

Something all companies should do. Small to big.

Below are some of the tips provided by Jolera, happy to remind you this holiday season that your company, no matter its size, has a target on its back!

  1. Investigate: Investigate immediately, as soon as you think something has gone wrong. Document everything meticulously.
  2. Patch Issues: Mitigate any damage if possible. For example, if the breach is due to a virus, try your best to isolate the virus.
  3. Communicate: Inform others about the breach. The more wary eyes (and hands) the better chance of it happening fewer times.
  4. Assess and Monitor: Continue to monitor the situation even when you think it’s ended. What better time to strike (sheeple)?
  5. Learn from your Mistakes: Consider a breach an opportunity to showcase your ability to strive and overcome. There’s a good chance some or many of your customers will find out. Best you can hope for is to control the narrative, and have some sort of plan prepared so you aren’t caught with your pants down. That’s a fast way to lose your customers’ confidence.
