4 Key Features Necessary for Remote Work

Remote work is becoming a major facet of general office routine and culture. Cloud technology capabilities continue to grow, and office locations and their layouts continue to trend towards the smaller, relying on revolving workers using one space.

So what can you do, as an employer/manager, or as a potential remote worker yourself, to make sure you have the necessary tools to complete your work at the same level, and communicate as well as you could in your office?

We’ve put together a short list of features below that you will want to make sure are available, whatever your position. Don’t get lost in the latest gadgets, or even in using your smartphone (although they can be a big help), necessarily, just focus on these aspects and see if they handle your remote work well.

 

  1. Video Conferencing: Pretty self-explanatory. Make sure you have, at the very least, Skype, or something like it so that any time you need to jump on a call with somebody, you can do it face to face. A major bonus would be using a video conferencing tool that includes screenshare.
  2. Coordinated Phone System: What this means is access to work files need to be available from everywhere, and that means coordinating your phone and-or data system with the tools you have at work. This is a must.
  3. A Find-me Service: This is for accountability, and total contact. It’s a kind of extended or second phone number (along with your cell phone number) that allows for contacts – be them clients or management – to call you immediately, wherever you are. Figure out a system that allows you to answer the most calls yourself – in other words, try not to rely on your voicemail system.
  4. A Chat System: Once again, a fairly basic concept. Introduce a chat system to make work even easier. There are plenty of free or low-cost options out there, as well as options that come within a kind of phone service bundle. Just find the one that works for you and enjoy.
