Everything You Need To Know About SIP Trunking

1 min read

What is SIP Trunking?

Session Initiation Protocol, or SIP, is the way you achieve voice over IP (VoIP) connectivity between an on-premises phone system and the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

In simple terms, SIP trunking is the method used by many organisations to allow a business phone system to work over an internet connection as opposed to legacy systems and traditional telephone landlines.

SIP is used for call establishment, management of high volume calls and replace TDM-Based services (Time-division multiplexing) . SIP trunking is typically sold as a replacement for digital Primary Rate Interfaces (PRIs).

How SIP Trunks work

Digitcom SIP Trunking provides communication to and from the Public Switched Telephone Network. SIP is a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology which uses the Internet to transmit phone calls. Like a normal phone line, SIP trunks use phone numbers to make and receive calls. Digitcom SIP operates over the public Internet. A dedicated Internet connection is optional, but not required. Digitcom strongly recommends a testing period to confirm acceptable interoperation before the service is put into production and numbers are ported in.

Digitcom can help you understand these metrics, and what tracking them can do for you. In this article, you’re going to see the five key metrics that tools like Xima measure, and how they can help you understand the phone services you provide to your customers.

Cost savings

Making the switch to SIP might be a lot less overwhelming than expected and, in the long run, might save your business a significant amount. On average, SIP Trunking costs 40% less than traditional cabling. SIP voice connections are virtual, which means you can add or subtract as many channels as you need at any location for a any long you need them.

Multiple Area Codes Route To A Single Location

Let’s say, for example, that you want the area code 604, 514, and 613 all to route to your Toronto office phone system; with TDM (PRI and analog lines) this would be very difficult to deliver, while with SIP trunking it comes standard.

Digitcom supports a wide range of international destinations.

Absolute Resilience

SIP Trunking can be used to provide a solution with guaranteed 100% up-time. In the unlikely event that all of your SIP Trunking services are unavailable at one site, you can instantly re-route your inbound calls to any destination by redirecting calls to a number of your choice.

SIP’s Fail-Over Features

Because the SIP phone line itself arrives on a data circuit, there is considerably more flexibility with the routing of in-bound calls, meaning that it’s very easy for SIP to fail over to an alternate location. Let’s say, for instance, that your Toronto phone system is down, HostedPBX can recognize the data circuit isn’t reaching its desired end point destination and we will automatically re-route the call path to an alternate data line.

Remote Call Forwarding

Number flexibility with SIP Trunking means that you can keep your existing number, even when moving out of the area, saving you costs on printed company literature and stationery whilst maintaining the perception that you still have a presence in the area you’ve moved from.

SIP Trunk Rationalization

Does your business have multiple sites? Do you have a PRI connection into an individual PBX at each site? By using SIP Trunking, you can reduce the number of PRI connections that your business requires and also reduce the maintenance costs on all of your various PBXs. At the remote sites you are left with just the cost of an IP connection and the handsets that you need and you can then pull all the telephony traffic back into your centralized PBX.

Not only that, but SIP Trunking also increases your resilience because you can build an automatic fail over system into your communications strategy for lines and calls, should your main site go down. With SIP Trunking you can instantly centralize and distribute the calls somewhere else, to another site or to home workers.
